Online Education Options for Military Spouses

It isn’t easy being a military spouse. Being married to someone in the armed forces usually means constant moving with little opportunity to put down roots.

But being a military spouse doesn’t mean you can’t get a good education. In fact, online learning is perfect for those who are unable to commit to a single, physical campus.

UMassOnline Advisor Spotlight: MaryBeth Kimball

Often students need guidance to help them achieve their highest potential. The University of Massachusetts recognizes the essential role that advisors play in the success of students and as a result, spends a great deal of time finding and employing some of the best advisors in higher education. This month, UMass spotlights MaryBeth Kimball, Director of Admissions and Advising at the Isenberg School of Management at the UMass Amherst campus. We caught up with MaryBeth to learn a little bit more about what she does for her students.

Common Question: How Quickly Can I Earn My Degree?

One of the many reasons students take online classes is for the flexibility it provides for those working a full time job and to take a “full load” of classes to graduate sooner.  One of the best aspects of taking online classes through UMass: the option to take classes as slowly or quickly as you like. Depending on students’ schedules and workload capacity, a full course load of six classes could be possible. If you know that you have a busy season coming up at work, perhaps a two class schedule makes more sense.

Common Question: Do I have to log in at specific times do group projects with other students?

One of the biggest draws of online classes is their flexibility. Students also want a program that is reputable enough to ensure that they will be as strong candidates in the job market as those that went to a brick and mortar institution.

UMassOnline delivers the same quality education from each of the five UMass campuses, but in an online format. Many faculty members take the time to teach their courses online as well as in person. Through this system, UMass can offer a wide range of courses and programs.

Are Online Degree Programs at UMass Easier Than Those at Traditional Universities?

Many scholars, dignitaries and professionals use the famous quote “Knowledge is Power” to stress the importance of education as a means to achieving ones goals. However, as higher education costs continue to rise growing number of students feel that a college education is simply out of their reach. For many, online education is the key to making the cost of education become more manageable regardless of students’ financial situations.

Accessibility of Online Education for Students

Accessibility to education is a concept that continues to be challenged as policy makers and economists struggle to find a solution that provides affordable, quality education for all. In the 21st century economy a college degree is often synonymous to success, but many potential students are unable to take on the financial burden or the lack of flexibility of a traditional brick and mortar school.

The Rise of Competency-Based Education

Time and time again the issue of accessible and affordable education is taking center stage this election season. Business leaders, educators and politicians alike are interested in not only lowering the cost of education but also providing students with a program that gives them the skills necessary to be successful in today’s job market. For many, the solution is competency-based education.

Important Factors to Consider When Exploring Online Education

You have a large variety of options when selecting an online university. While each school has something different to offer, it’s important to know what to look for in a school:

The Truth About Online Education

Online education has evolved over the last few years. The idea of taking classes solely through your computer without the physical interaction of professors or other students has only taken hold in the mainstream for about a decade, so it’s not surprising that there are still many misconceptions about this growing type of education. Here are a few of these myths (along with a dose of reality to debunk each of them):

Embarking on a New Journey - Class of 2014

The University of Massachusetts proudly sent off another successful class of graduates earlier this year. Commencement is always such a special time when families and friends gather to celebrate the academic achievements of their loved ones. Many members of the staff at UMassOnline had the chance to attend the on-campus commencement ceremonies this year and connect with the graduates on their big day. It gave them a chance to share their success stories and encourage others who might be considering obtaining their degree online.
