This course looks at the development of the Laus Stultitiae in Erasmus, starting with the Latin translations of the Satirical dialogues of Lucian that he and Thomas More produced, working through pertinent passages from Erasmusê correspondence, and finally moving into the full Latin text of the second edition of Praise of Folly, with an examination of its divergence from the first edition. Students will consider how Erasmusê collaboration with More and his time in London seem to have emboldened him to sharpen his critique of the powerful of his age. The course will then examine the influence of the Laus Stultitiae on Erasmusê later writing and on the satirical works of subsequent authors.
