Special Topics: American Soldiers in American Wars

ñAmerican Soldiers in Americans Warsî places the experiences, perspectives, and memories of American soldiers at the center of a historical study of U.S. wars from the Civil War to our more modern military conflicts. We will approach each U.S. war/military conflict through three different, but related, historical lenses. First, there will be an introduction to the basic history of the war and a discussion of various historical interpretations of the origins and causes of the war. Second, and at the heart of the course, is a heavy focus on the ñlived experiencesî of American soldiers during each U.S. military conflict. Here we will rely a great deal upon the words of soldiers themselves _ their letters, diaries, journals, interviews, memoirs and other writings. The third avenue of study is that of historical memory.
