The purpose of this course is to help middle school teachers become more effective when they are teaching mechanics topics. The course is designed to strengthen the understanding of mechanics concepts through the deepening of intuitive reasoning and through formal physical analysis. It will primarily focus on the areas of Motion, Forces, Newton's laws and Energy. Some work with fluids will be included to work with density and pressure concepts. We will carefully consider some of the preconceptions that hinder students as they encounter these topics for the first time. In addition the course is designed to strengthen participants understanding of fundamental concepts. As teachers they will be expected to identify those topics, teaching materials, and instructional strategies that they feel will most help their own students. This course will emphasize a conceptual approach in most areas along with some mathematical problems where they seem to be essential. Participants will be encourage to make careful decisions about such issues as units, notation, numerical problems, appropriate analogies, and useful diagrams.
