This online course will provide students with an in-depth understanding of negotiation as an integral part of diplomatic practice. The course expounds that negotiation is the oldest method of peaceful settlement consistently aiming to conclude international commitments. Diplomatic negotiation is examined in its role of effective means for achieving the foreign policy objectives and a key technique for promoting national interests. The course focuses on the evolution of diplomatic norms and practices, the nature of "bargaining" power in international politics, cultural differences in international negotiation, and the role of ideas in international bargaining. The course highlights the nexus between theory and practice in international relations. In comparing models of negotiation effectiveness, the course studies the methodological variety of research in the negotiation field. Among the addressed topics are: power in negotiations, coalition building, interdependence, international bargaining, third-party interventions, bargaining failure, and negotiation ethics.
