Special Topics: Media Literacy and Pop Culture

What is popular culture? Do we organize our lives around media or does the media shape our lives? Media is a powerful tool of education, socialization, and indoctrination that influences our understanding of the world and permeates the fabric of our daily lives. In this class, students will hone their media literacy skills by consuming and deconstructing mass media and popular culture – movies, TV, music, sports, video games, fashion, politics, advertisements, food, social media – with the ultimate goal of making sense of and controlling their own media environments.
