UMass Amherst's Arts Management program has evolved over 25 years of nationwide instruction to meet the learning needs of community arts leaders.
Designed for busy individuals who want to advance their nonprofit management skills through professional development rather than a degree program. Arts Extension Service, a nationwide leader of continuing professional education for arts managers, offers an eight-part series of distance learning courses via the Internet. These online courses teach problem-solving techniques, management skills, and principles for the workplace. The courses feature written lectures and job-related field assignments.
Course topics include planning, board development, fundraising, marketing, and arts programming. Additional topics include program evaluation, arts education and financial management. Each class is taught by an AES certified instructor who monitors discussions, provides feedback on assignments, and helps students understand principles and solve problems. Students communicate with each other and faculty through e-mail, threaded discussions, and posted assignments.

Earn a Certificate in Arts Management by successfully completing four online courses. Success is defined as completing all assignments well and participating meaningfully in class discussions. Complete all eight classes for a Professional Track Certificate. All courses require students to identify a nonprofit organization as a case study to which they will apply course principals and assignments. Most students choose the organization for which they work or volunteer so the course can immediately pay off with improved management and programs.
