About the Program Tuition and Fees Accreditation Admissions Plan of Study Financial Aid Testimonials UMass Dartmouth's Women's Studies Online Program offers a fully online degree completion program to students who wish to enter into the field of Women's Studies. Students who complete the program receive a Bachelor's of Arts in Women's Studies.
Why Women's Studies?
- Women's Studies explores women's experiences by placing women at the center of inquiry as subjects rather than objects. It also examines women's lives, voices, histories, roles, and ideas in an effort to understand how women-of various classes, races, ethnicities, sexualities, religions, and ages-have been constructed, identified, oppressed, acclaimed, and developed.
- Women's Studies argues that women's experiences are important if we are to understand human society and to make changes cross-culturally. Gender alone does not yield a full understanding of women's lives, so Women's Studies courses examine other factors, such as race, class, culture, and sexuality.
- Women's Studies Prepares You for the Future
- Women's Studies prepares students to live and work in an increasingly diverse culture. The program helps students to:
- Understand the role of diversity within the nation and the world, especially pertaining to the ways in which gender is linked to race, ethnicity, class, and sexuality, etc.
- Develop lifelong learning skills as they learn to self-reflect on both their place and their responsibilities within their local community
- Develop self-confidence, critical thought processes, and communication skills that contribute to academic achievement and successful post-university careers
- A WMS degree enables students to pursue a variety of occupations in fields such as the arts, business, education, health care, media, politics, law, social services, and psychology.

Admission & Degree Requirements
Eligible students for the Women's Studies Online Degree Completion Program have either of the following:
- 45-60 credits from an accredited community college
- 75 credits at an accredited university
As this is a degree completion program, students with 45-75 credits may be accepted through the UMass Dartmouth transfer credit policy. Program Highlights
- Students receive an advisor from the time they start their studies until graduation
- UMass Dartmouth Women's Studies faculty teach all courses, and can be reached by email, phone or in person
- Students can complete the WMS degree completion program within two years
- Students can also work with a UMass Dartmouth Women's Studies advisor to help earn their B.A. degree at their own pace
Program Requirements
The WMS major is composed of 36 credits, with 21 required credits at the upper level, that are completed in the following way:
- WMS 101: Introduction to Women's Studies
- WMS 201: Introduction to Feminist Theory
- WMS 312: Feminist Research Methods
- Course in Feminist Theory (WMS 302: Global Feminism; WMS 305: Contemporary Feminist Theory; WMS 306: Third Wave Feminism; WMS 307: Ecofeminism)
- WMS 499: Capstone Seminar
- One course in each of the following concentration areas: 1) Gender Studies, 2) Politics, 3) Justice and Policy, 3) Cross-Cultural Inquiry, and 4) Arts and Letters
- Two additional courses in one of the four concentration areas
- One elective course in any of the concentrations or in feminist theory
Graduation Requirements
In addition, students will need to meet the overall College of Arts and Sciences and university degree requirements as follows:
- A total of 120 credits is required for the BA
- A minimum GPA of 2.0 in all courses is required
- A minimum GPA of 2.0 in all courses used to satisfy the Women's Studies Major requirements is required
- 60 credits completed at UMass Dartmouth (45 if transferring from another 4-year institution)
- 30 credits in 300+ level courses take at or under supervision of UMass Dartmouth
Additional online courses are available each semester to build your course load. Working with your WMS faculty advisor, you will receive your degree progress each semester to ensure degree completion in two years. Availability of financial aid varies depending on matriculation and course status. Please check with your advisor to determine your eligibility. Generally, if you are matriculated in a degree program and are enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits each semester, you may qualify for financial aid.
Students who are admitted to the program should review our Financial Aid Checklist, and fill ill out the FAFSA form at www.fafsa.ed.gov. It is important to list the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth school code number 002210.
