Programs

This program is designed to meet the needs of a local, national and international audience of adults wishing to enter the School Counseling field. It is a 60-credit master's which meets the academic requirements for certification in the state of Massachusetts as a School Counselor.

The program operates on a cohort model whereby all participants complete the same program of study. Two weeks of on campus study is required to complete two clinical courses. These courses will be taught the first summer of the program, generally during the month of July. The remaining coursework is online. The sessions are held at a site in Massachusetts and housing is available at a reasonable rate (Housing information will be provided by the program upon request).

Registration is administered through University College at UMass Boston. Payment is due upon registration. Please see Fee Schedule below.

Additional Fees: Every online student pays a one time "travel fee" that helps the department to maintain a fund that enables internship and department faculty to travel to internship sites if necessary. This fee is assessed during the internship year. Most internship sites do not require a visit; but if they do, our fund will sponsor the professor's travel.

The online MEd in School Counseling prepares students for School Counseling Licensure through the MA Department of Education. The University of Massachusetts is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). The School Counseling Online Program is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Education.

Admissions Requirements

Please see the general statement of admission requirements for all graduate studies programs in the "Admissions" section of this publication. Also refer to the description of admission requirements listed under "Professional Preparation Programs for Education" in the "Regulations, Procedures, and Degree Requirements" section of this publication.

Counseling Program faculty recommend admission of applicants who present evidence of potential both to complete a graduate course of studies with distinction and to become thoughtful and responsive practitioners. Such evidence normally includes:

• A minimum of five social science courses.
  
• A distinguished undergraduate transcript with at least a 3.0 cumulative average. The GRE or MAT is required for admissions to the school counseling program.
  
• The GRE/MAT is waived for applicants who have completed an advanced degree such as a master's or doctorate with graded course work. In addition, school counseling students (who are MA residents) must take the literacy portion of the Massachusetts Test of Educator Licensure (MTEL).
  
• Three strong letters of recommendation indicating the ability to work well with others.
  
• A two-part letter of intent. For specific details, please refer to the application instructions available at http://www.umb.edu/admissions/graduate/apply/graduate-application.pdf. *Please be aware that your start term should be summer (e.g. Summer 2012). If you put start term fall (e.g. Fall 2012), you will be taking summer courses as a non-degree student which means you will not be eligible for financial aid until the fall semester. The starting term and program cannot be changed once you submit the application.
  
• A group interview with other candidates and faculty members.
  
• At least one year of paid or volunteer work in a mental health, school, or equivalent setting is recommended.

Availability of financial aid varies depending on matriculation and course status. Please check with your program manager or advisor to determine your eligibility. Generally, if you are matriculated in a degree program and are enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits each semester, you may qualify for financial aid. Please review our Financial Aid Checklist below.
